I wish it was market day

May 19, 2011 by Anna 6 Comments

Sunny spring mornings like this, when Carl doesn’t have to work till the afternoon and everyone is well-rested, make me miss Ottawa.

A morning like this would almost certainly mean making the 10-minute jaunt to downtown to enjoy a beautiful 20 minute walk along the canal to Byward Market where we could enjoy the atmosphere and pick up reams of fresh fruits and veggies for the week.

Nothing beats buying berries like this, and peppers, rhubarb, asparagus, beans, cauliflower, potatoes…I could go on.  Suffice to say we always went home with the basket of our stroller jam-packed with fresh, local, pesticide free goodness for lower prices than the grocery store.

I crave the market on mornings like this.

And then we would ogle the colourful flowers that would never survive in our dark little apartment.

And then we would stop at the bakery on the corner for a loaf of fresh bread to enjoy with our dinner of fresh veggies.

Coincidentally, the same bakery President Obama stopped in while visiting the capital.  They continue to profit off “Obama cookies”, and will for many years I’m sure.

Then we would wander over to Parliament Hill and relax in the sunshine with our bald little baby.

Sigh.

If you ever get the chance, visit Ottawa, and go to the Byward Market too.  You’ll love it.

There are some pretty special people o’er dere too to miss.

Abbotsford, you fail me on mornings like this.

Hey! We were treated to a tour of that market, ate in the delish bakery and saw parliament hill/buildings just last week with the Slomps. What a beautiful area and city!…the company was great too :). Fun to see this post!

How fun! I’m glad you liked it too…my uncle figures every Canadian should visit Ottawa at some point since they spend the rest of their lives contributing to it :)

I still like St. Jacob’s market the best (although Ottawa’s was nice…don’t get mad at me all you very nice Ottawa people:)). I don’t cram a stroller with food but I do manage to fill an entire cooler with perishables and the trunk of the car full with the rest. I can’t resist all the fruits, veggies, country sausage, thick sliced bacon (so lean you almost have to grease the pan to cook it), cheese, curds, spicy pepperettes, red pepper jelly, and of course, just before leaving, the fresh and hot from the oven cinnamon buns made by a Mennonite lady who is always at the market. Seriously, no matter how much I may be watching my intake, I MUST have a bun!! After all, when it’s gone, I’ll be eating all those fruit and veggies I can hardly fit in my fridge. It is definitely the time of year when fresh food cravings hit. I can hardly wait.

Aw! We miss you too, Anna! I wish today was sunny and bright and that we would have time to go to the market. But, alas, it’s raining… again. Maybe tomorrow. I love the market and the fresh veggies – can’t wait for the berries to be ready too! :)
