I’m joining with some other fabulous bloggers today to tell you about one of my favourite cookbooks of all time: Butter Baked Goods, by Rosie Daykin. We’ve partnered with the lovely Rosie on this, so make sure you make it all the way to the bottom to enter the giveaway!
This cookbook made a surprise appearance (thanks Mom!) on my doorstep last year, after I drooled on every page of my mom’s copy. I’ve made a few variations of the homemade marshmallows, my favourite being the mint chocolate, enjoyed the filled peanut butter cookies from my sister, and I pretty much want to make everything else. Today we’re giving one reader the chance to win their own autographed copy of the cookbook, along with a custom box of delicious fresh-baked treats from the bakery!
The bakery is right close by to me in Vancouver, and I had a chance to sample some of the amazing goodness last month. Let me tell you, it lived up to the hype. Rosie’s homemade Oreos are named one of the “101 things to eat in Vancouver before you die”, and I had one, so I guess I’m one step closer to going in peace.
I only wish I’d had a couple more.
But the treat that jumped out to me when I tasted it, that I had to go home and make immediately, was the Dunbar. The name comes from the street the bakery can be found on…if you find yourself in Vancouver, head to Dunbar Street and sniff out Butter Bakery :)
Why was this the one that grabbed me?
Helloooo, butter, oats, and brown sugar. My three favourite words to hear together. Yup, I’d take them over “I love you” any day…butter, oats and brown sugar = true love. Make me these and I am yours, at least until they’re all polished off.
Add to that addictive trifecta the wonders of coconut, dark chocolate, pecans and caramel and swooooooon, you have the Dunbar! This baby is loaded.
No recipe today (such a tease!), because I really want you to enter and win the gorgeous, inspiring book and tasty treats for yourself! I will tell you for when you make these…I didn’t mix my dry ingredients on parchment paper because that seemed messier than a good ol’ fashioned bowl, and I didn’t pipe my caramel sauce on, I dumped it willy-nilly to save on clean up. If you’ve been reading my lazy-girl’s blog for any length of time you probably would’ve guessed that as soon as you read the directions :)
You’ll have to look up this recipe the second you get your hands on the book. If you’re wondering what else you’ll find in these pages, have a look through the amazing foodstuffs below baked by my blogging friends – I love that a couple of these ladies went for the savory breakfast goods to balance out all the sweets the rest of us were drawn to :)

My favorite holiday treat – Pecan Pralines.
Erin G says
I’m not sure I can pick a favourite treat… anything chocolate & mint is high up on my list! My husband doesn’t like that combination which is fine by me because then I get more ;) !
Anna says
Oooh, you’re going to love the mint chocolate nanaimo bars I have coming up soon, they are one of the best things I’ve made in awhile!
Erin G says
It’s funny you mention those… it’s exactly what I was thinking of when I made that comment. My Mom used to make them at Christmas every year. I think she called them Midnight Bars. Looking forward to your recipe!
Christina says
I wouldn’t use the parchment or pipe caramel either :). I so hope that I win this! If I don’t, then the book will likely be on my Christmas list anyway. These look delish!
Isabelle @ Crumb says
I am SO jealous that you live near Butter. Seriously. I’m lime green with envy right now.
I have experienced the Dunbar for myself, though, since that was the first recipe I tried out when I got my paws on the book last year. They are honestly the bestest thing ever, even though they are probably a zillion calories apiece. (And that was even after I cut mine to half-size, because the full size was way too much buttery deliciousness.)
Anna says
I cut mine to half-size…but figured that justified eating two, so I guess that didn’t work out quite as planned :)
Gwen says
Homemade shortbread cookies are my favorite!
Andrea says
My Mom puts out amazing Christmas baking platters every year, and it is all so good! But, I’d have to say her Nanaimo Bars and Crown Jewel Bars are my favourite. I also love anything with almond – Almond Puff, Almond Filled Speculaas, etc. :)
Kim says
While I love so many holiday treats, somehow my favourite is still shortbread, Maybe that is because I only make it at Christmas. And no wonder I like to bake so much…it’s my way of showing people I butter, oats and brown sugar them :)
julie says
peppermint bark!!
Adria says
Chocolate cheese layer bars. Just had them at my sister’s birthday party and remembered that this family favorite is delicious
Lori says
I can’t quite decide between Nanaimo Bars and Cranberry Shortbread Bars (Fine Cooking), but the Dunbar should definately make its way into my Christmas baking repertoire. Please do post the recipe soon:)
Leslie says
Gingerbread!! Ginger snaps! All things spicy! :)
Carla says
Really 1? I’m busy working on my Christmas baking list right now and stocking the freezer before our trip.
Anything to do with almond flavour is a must at Christmas!
The ideal favourite is my mother in laws Bokkepootjes (in English Goat’s Feet, wierd name). I’m challenging myself this year to make them! Hope they are half as good as hers…
Anna says
Oooh, brave! I’ve never heard of those, you might have to share the recipe if they are such a favourite :)
Tanya says
My favourite holiday treat would have to be olliebollen :) But if I have to choose some type of baking probably nanaimo bars! :)
Janet M. says
My favorite is my grandmother’s mincemeat pie. I’d give anything to taste it again.
Renae says
gevulde speculaas :) There’s just something about the spices and texture that make them irresistible! That’s not really a holiday treat, more like a year round treat, but that’s my favorite :)
Denise says
nanaimo bars for sure!!! And will you eventually post this recipe???Please???
Anna says
I might have to after the giveaway to make those who didn’t win feel better…because these are a definite must-make :)
Esther says
Even though I’m normally an oats shortbread girl, it’s a close tie between butter tarts and naniamo bars. They definitely mean Christmas is here to me. :)
Meg @ Sweet Twist says
Oh these bars look awesome. I am going to have to try these ones for sure!!
Liliana says
What a wonderful cookbook! This is one of the recipes I have bookmarked to make. The bars look absolutely delicious!
Libby says
Nice! Now I know what to make next!
Irene says
Sounds like an awesome cookbook to have on my shelf!
Tanya says
Ooh I love giveaways! It’s hard to choose a holiday favourite, but the one that popped into my mind right away was Cranberry Bliss Bars!
Arenda says
What a lovely giveaway! My favourite holiday treat is probably pepernoten (those dutch mini cookies) b/c they have so many memories attached to them… but if I had to choose something homemade, I’d go with almond puff – a delicious, puffy almond-flavoured pastry topped with an almond glaze. Yum!
Robyn says
I am dying to make these!!! They were on my shortlist of things to make for this post but you snatched them up before me, and I don’t blame you! They almost remind me of a Hello Dolly with the coconut, pecans and chocolate. Add dulce de leche and you’re calling my name!
Anna says
You have to make them! Although I did cut them much smaller than she recommends, because they are RICH, in the best way!
