Forget March, May is where the madness happens.
We’ve been busy, but in a fantastic way, between celebrating a brand new 6-year-old, enjoying Mother’s Day, and taking a couple nights away to celebrate our anniversary. Somewhere in there I started a new semester of school, so this week will be spent wrapping my head around due dates and papers and picking up remnants of balloons and wrapping paper.
First, the beautiful birthday girl and her new wheels.
And her requested “rainbow butterfly” cake (yup, she’s a girl :)), another reminder that cake decorating is sooo not my thang. I broke an actual sweat over this, guys. Don’t be cheap like me and buy the multi-coloured chocolate chips, just go ahead and buy as many individual colours as you need because separating them into colour piles late at too-high-of-a-temperature night = the stuff of hot summer nightmares.
The next day dawned as Mother’s Day, and the kiddos didn’t disappoint, with my requested big skillet in appearance. To keep it a little less utilitarian (although useful gifts are exactly my favourite gifts), there were also chocolates, which Theo was reluctant to relinquish.
The next day we left for two nights away and, as one does after 8 years of marriage for fear of being called boring, I got me some pink hair. The kids were more surprised than Carl – he’s used to me :)
We ate some of the best sushi ever, had breakfast crepes after 10:00 am because sleeping-in-I-have-no-words, wandered in gorgeous weather, dined for $4.95 instead of dressing up and creating foodie expectations, and both had a first-ever caramel apple, which, while gorgeous, mostly tasted like an apple and a chocolate bar, but not as good as either of those is separately.
We remained consistent in our selfie skillz. My tippy toes just aren’t getting any tippier.
Phew. I hope the rest of May is a little less eventful :)

Love your idea if having to stay young. I’m glad I’m not the only one who has these kinds of ideas ;) is something fun happening for your birthday?
Anna says
It’s good to keep the people around us on their toes ;) This was for our anniversary, my birthday isn’t for awhile yet…but I’ll have to think of something :)
Irene says
I’m jealous of your pink hair, I’ve always wanted to do purple:)
Anna says
I want purple too! This is a kind of hair chalk that comes in different colours…so I think I’ll have to add purple to my collection :) You should do it!
Kim says
Beautiful bike Gemma!!! And pink hair!?!?!?! :P You’re too young for the midlife crisis! As your mother, I hope it wasn’t permanent colour…see I can still nag and interfere even after you’re married ;)
Anna says
It’s not permanent…yet ;) I’m saving other, bigger things for my midlife crisis!
Sarah says
Lots of busy fun! And ummm, turn the camera the other way, Carl. :)

It sounds like your May is as busy as ours! We had our 10th on the 1st, and Eden’s birthday is the 2nd. We are not going away until August though (why did we get married in May when we KNEW Ben was going to be a teacher?). Congratulations on 8 years!
